Ethel Merman - a year of anniversaries

The 16th January 2008, or 2009 depending upon which source you believe marked the one hundredth anniversary of  Ethel Merman's birth. May 21st 2009 marks the 50th anniversary of Merman's favourite show, Gypsy opening on Broadway and finally 15th February 2009 marked the 25th anniversary of Merman's passing.

Broadway's most legendary star made her theatrical debut in Gershwin's Girl Crazy in 1930. She went on to star in five Cole Porter hits, including Panama Hattie and Anything Goes introducing more Porter's songs than any other artiste.

Later starring roles included the leads in Annie Get Your Gun, Call Me Madam and the career-defining Gypsy. With songs ranging from 'There's No Business Like Show Business' to 'Everything's Coming Up Roses', Merman remains an unforgettable showbiz icon to this very day.

To mark this year of anniversaries Joyous Pie Productions is staging a variety of events throughout 2009.
